Library 2.0 Thing 5

In reading about Library 2.0, it needs to be put in layman's terms.

Thing 30

The unexpected outcome for me is that I finished it. There were a couple of spots where I got stuck but I continued the learning. In the future, the exercises could be shortened a bit taking less time away from other projects or assignments that we may have.

I have gained valuable discoveries through the exercises in Learning. Many of the technology in the things I would not have explored had it not been for the Learning.

Thanks Cindy for the new adventure.

Thing 29 Learning Experience

The Learning 2.0 experience was an adventure. My first thought was not to try it but I decided to take the challenge and learn something new. I had fun exploring Rollyo, wiki, podcast, image generator and blogging. Some of this technology such as wiki and podcast I was a little familiar with. It has been a rewarding experience because now I have a better idea of how to use the new technology out there. I have not become a pro from using Learning 2.0 but I am now better familiar with the new technology.

Thing 28 Rollyo

In exploring Rollyo, I think that this would be a good reference source. I see it as a one-stop reference source. I explored books and authors, answer.com, major newspapers and was able to get some valid hits.

Thing 27 Library_Thing

This exercise was fun and user friendly. A good reference point to select reading material. The line to my books is http://www.librarything.com/catalog/Bakerman.

Thing 26 Online_Image_Generator

I played around with image generators and found an image of President Bush. the link is http://www.imagegenerator.net/create/bush_door/

Thing 25 Podcasting

I listened to a tour of Hayden Library through the Library Channel. This audio tour was in MP3 format being viewed through the media. I found viewing through the media was bad for the eyes. I did like the fact of listening to the tour. Though Listening and view a video would have been ideal. I was able to do other thing as I listened.

Thing 24 Podcast

I found that the directory was user friendly. I sampled some music artists that I like and was able to find their music.

Thing 23 Youtube

I found a lot of sites but I didn't like that with in the selection there may be videos that I prefer not to look at. There also seemed to be videos unrelated to the site topic. I created Youtube account. I found a video on making swedish meatballs for any superbowl party from holidaykitchen.

Thing 22 Flicker Mashup

I played around in Trip Planner. It was interesting to read about the trips that people went on. I also planned a trip in Trip Planner. It is easy use.

Thing 21 tagging

In reading the articles, tags are used to label a photo that is added to make it easier to find. Flickr is widely used by bloggers as a photo respository and you are able to save a lot of photos. Flickr enable a person to create collages, book quality images and more. One way that flickr is different from traditional photosharing web sites is who uses it.

Thing 20 Flickr

This has been a fun experience. Now I have some idea as to how Flictr works. My picture of a sunset is here. http://nufronteer.blogspot.com/2008/02/flickr.html

Flickr

This is a test post from flickr, a fancy photo sharing thing.

Thing 19

I chose the category fun stuff and selected one sentence. These are true stories written in one line. To me it is a place to vent, to read gossip and to read about funny happenings.

Thing 18 Technorati

Technorati has a clean look. I like the way the you can read top blogs or top searches. There are a variety of catagories.

I used a keyword search for Learning 2.0 and was not able to get in results.

Thing 17 Tagging & Folksonomy & Del.icio.us

This is a bit overwhelming. I have seen tag cloud many times not realizing the terminology. I can see how these method of categorizing and bookmarking will be helpful in research.

Thing 16 MySpace

Setting up a MySpace account was easy. I can see why it is so popular with many different people. A way to meet people and network with people.

Thing 14 RA Wiki

I found that the wiki was user friendly.

Thing 15 Social Networking

There are many issues that needs to be addressed concerning social networking but it could be a great way to connect our teen/youth volunteers with each other.

Thing 13 wiki

I learned that wiki is from an Hawaiian phase "wiki wiki". This phase is used to indicate something fast. Wikipedia is the largest wiki in the world. I found the use of the phase "collective knowledge" to describe the wiki interesting.

In looking through the wiki, I came across "What song was Number 1 on the day you were born".
This was fun to visit.

In the library a wiki will work well in providing book reviews, working on various teams and where public opinion is needed.

Thing 12 How VBPL Use IM

Instant Messaging is becoming more popular as a means of communications for the youth. In talking with a VBPL staff, IM is not being used much by our customers. When our customers realize that we have this technology available and feel comfortable using IM, it will take off.

I find it interesting that Meebo is fairly new but it users exchange 100 million IM daily.

Instant Messaging in the Libraries

IM is being used more in the libraries. It is a technology that connects patrons with their librarians and is a type of conversation.

In reading the articles, the young generation prefer IM to email. IM will reach a segment of the population that they would not reach through visiting the library or email.

Thing 10

I found my preference was www.topix.net. It was easier on my eyes and I like the layout of the information on the page.

RSS Feeds

Today I learned how to subscribe to newsfeed. This is still new territory for me but I was able to follow the directions for one of the Discovery Exercises and subscribe.
